60-80% of the UK will report back pain at some point in their lives. When pain radiates down the back of the leg or buttock from the back this is commonly termed as sciatica. This can be in the form of numbness, pins and needles or shooting pain. Commonly it is only felt down one side of the body.

Sciatica can be caused by a variety of lower back injuries, some of these include facet locks or irritations, disc bulges and even muscle spasm. These injuries impinge on the sciatic nerve and that is what causes a nerve pain down the leg.

It is important that at the clinic we do a full orthopaedic examination and neurological tests to determine the cause of the impinged nerve. By doing this we are able to treat the problem effectively and cause the sciatic pain to dissipate. This in time will gradually disappear and with relevant exercises and maintenance treatments, may never come back.

At the Woodside Osteopathic Clinic in Hitchin, our practitioners will take a full case history and complete a full orthopaedic examination to diagnose your condition. We are specialists and there- fore cater our techniques to your needs. Treatment will include specific spinal or joint mobilisation, exercise prescription and hydrotherapy.
